Former mayors of Bangalore, on Monday, asked Mayor Venkatesh Murthy to streamline revenue collection and make the BBMP debt-free.

During an interaction, former mayors K Lakkanna, P R Ramesh, J Huchchappa, K H N Simha, B V Putte Gowda, Padmavathy Gangadhar Gowda and M Ramachandrappa, urged the Mayor to pay attention to beautifying the City and ensuring better administration.

Lakkanna said BBMP should aim at widening the tax net and controlling unnecessary expenses. The mayor should lead an all-party delegation of corporators to Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda to seek additional grants of at least Rs 2,000 crore.

Ramesh said if the Sakrama scheme is implemented, the Palike will get sufficient funds
to clear the loans and become self-reliant. However, he said Sakrama scheme should be drafted in a people-friendly manner by holding public interaction. Constitution of ward committees and area sabhas is the need of the hour for better coordination between corporators and the public, he added.

Huchchappa suggested the Mayor should direct the Horticulture and Forest department to encourage planting native species of saplings which are strong.

Tax need to be levied on the cars parked on the roads to generate revenue, he added.
