Two security guards at Pitampura in north west Delhi foiled a bid to rob a car parked outside a jewellery shop, shooting dead one of the four armed men.

The robbers came to Heera Jewellers around 3:45 am on Monday and tried to break open the lock of a Bolero parked outside the showroom, police said.

Two security guards — Lalit and Krishan — who were on duty outside the showroom, grew suspicious of their activities. They warned them, asking them to go away.

“But the youths did not pay heed to them and threatened that they would shoot them. Meanwhile, one of the youths succeeded in his attempt to break open the lock of the vehicle and another opened fire on the guards,”  said additional deputy commissioner of police, (north-west) Romil Baniya said.

When one of the robbers started the car  using a master ignition key, both guards fired at the vehicle. Lalit’s shot, with his .315 bore rifle, hit the driver in the head, killing him on the spot. Seeing this, the rest of the robbers fled.

Meanwhile, a police patrol was informed about the incident. The police team recovered the body of the robber, and the car from the spot.

Delhi police are planning to reward Lalit and Krishan for their courage. The car, used in carrying jewellery to and from the showroom, was registered in the name of Heera Jewellers' owner, said a police officer.

A case under sections of robbery was registered at Maurya Enclave police station, the official added.
“An investigation in the case is on and efforts are being made to identify the deceased and the others involved in the case,” Baniya said.
