Waiting for the first day

Visibly excited

Just a few days remain until colleges in the City throw open their doors to the first PU students, and the latter can’t be more excited about it. Emotions are running high — be it anticipation of the much-talked-about ‘college life’, apprehension over meeting new people and attending new classes or simply looking forward to a new phase in life.

Stepping into a college environment for the first time can be bewildering — but students in the City tell Metrolife that they simply can’t wait until June 13, which is when a majority of Bangalore’s colleges — barring a few — are opening.

Most of the colleges are opening with a short orientation, which students admit to anticipating.

It gives them a chance to get acquainted with the campus before plunging themselves into a host of different classes and extracurricular activities. It’s also a great time for the students to interact with their teachers and seniors, and familiarise themselves with the college.

Vaishnavi, who will be joining Christ Junior College, is visibly thrilled. She had always dreamt of snagging a seat in this institution and now that there are just a few days left before the new session begins, she can barely control her excitement. “The subjects I’ve chosen are psychology, political science, economics and sociology. I can’t wait for my first day — I’ve always wanted to go to this college and now that it’s actually happening, I’m over the moon,” she says candidly.

She’s rather looking forward to her orientation session. “We’re going to start the new term with an orientation and inauguration ceremony. We might not get to meet our seniors — since they are already attending their classes — but we can interact with our teachers and our new classmates. I don’t have any jitters whatsoever — I’m just excited!” she smiles.

Vignesh, a science student who has enrolled himself at the Deeksha Centre for Learning, Yelahanka, is a bit more reserved — but that doesn’t mean he isn’t anticipating his first day at college.

“My term begins on June 13. I think we’ll start off with an introduction and I’m really looking forward to meeting new friends there,” he says. The subjects he’s chosen — physics, maths, chemistry and computers — aren’t exactly a walk in the park and he’s aware of that.

“They are tough subjects, so I have to study hard throughout the year. But I still expect to have a really good time at college. After I finish my PU, I might apply for engineering at RVCE,” he states.

Sanjana has snagged a seat at Mount Carmel PU College, and her orientation is scheduled to be held on June 15. “I expect that they’ll use that day to tell us about the college, the timings we’ll have to keep and generally clear our doubts about campus life.

Some of my friends have joined with me and I’m happy I’ll have some familiar faces around. But I’m looking forward to making new friends too,” she says, adding, “I plan to join some extracurricular activities right away — including playing the drums, swimming and basketball.”

She’s frank enough to admit that she’s a bit nervous. “But I think I’ll be fine once I actually get to college,” she concludes.
