ATM vehicle robbers left no clue: Police

Last Updated 14 June 2012, 20:02 IST

Police officers investigating the sensational armed robbery of an ATM cash-carrying vehicle at RT Nagar were in complete dark as the gang involved was new to the area and left no clues.

Three special teams were on the case 24X7, a senior police official said. Clueless, the City police contacted their counterparts in the neighbouring states and identified eight recent cases in which an almost similar modus operandi was followed.

The teams collected information on the suspects with the co-ordination of their counterparts. As all belonged to different parts of the country, surprisingly all had one thing in common – they had served a jail sentence at the Arthur Road prison and were fellow cellmates.

Based on this chilling connection, the City police successfully tracked down five people. On sustained interrogation, they revealed how they – 13 of them – got together at the Arthur Road prison and executed the armed robbery.

Police say the gang shared the Rs 1.91-crore bounty among themselves after the dacoity and dispersed to various parts of the country.

While the police have been successful in tracking down five of them, eight others are still at large.
