The said area witnessed a massive land slide in 2007-08, which literally cut off the area from the other parts of the district. Realising the seriousness of the issue, District-in-Charge Minister K S Eshwarappa started the construction work of the retaining wall under Natural Calamities Fund. ZP Member H M Sathish said that the officials turned away from the project by handing over the work on contract basis. They even failed to keep an eye on the quality of the work. “The steel used for the work was of poor quality and adequate quantity of cement too was not used. It is due to this reason that the wall collapsed before completion,” he added. He said that a sum of Rs 28 lakh had been released for the project out of the estimated total cost of Rs 38 lakh.

“This is the result of sheer carelessness of district administration, which needs to be condemned. We will organise a jatha from Basarikatte to Jayapura and stage a protest at the spot where the wall has collapsed if Government fails to pay attention towards the matter,” he said.
