Faulty air con stalls 30 surgeries

No operations for a week at main theatre

The main operation theatre at Aruna Asaf Ali Government Hospital has not been functioning for the last one week as its air conditioner is not working.

Without the air conditioner, surgeons fear patients may catch infection.

“The cooling machine in the main operation room stopped working a week ago. We conduct four to five operations a day. At least 30 operations have been postponed due to this,” said a technical staff of the hospital.

Now, the surgeons are not conducting surgeries without the air conditioner.
They say sweat can cause infection in open wounds.

They also complained that it is too hot to spend three hours in a closed room.
“The equipment in an operation room sometimes do not function properly due to high temperature. Dripping sweat can lead to worsening of a patient’s case,” said a surgeon in Safdarjung Hospital.

“India anyway has a high rate of hospital acquired infection, a majority of which originate in the operation room,” said the surgeon. The hospital acquired infection rate is 23 per cent in India.

Surgeries are being carried out at the emergency operation theatre.

But the air conditioner in the emergency ward has also been out of order for the last fortnight. Patient suffer in hot conditions in the eight-bed ward.

No repairs

Sources said the public works department, which is responsible for maintenance of air conditioners in the hospital, has not been repairing faulty appliances on time.

Hospital authorities refused to comment on the problems being faced in the main operation room. “We are conducting emergency operations,” said Dr S B Shrivastava, medical superintendent of the hospital.

The hospital, located in north Delhi near Tis Hazari, is a 100-bed civil hospital.

It caters to areas under eight police stations and is responsible for providing medical facilities even to court employees and judges.

It is also the nodal hospital for managing medical needs during Delhi Assembly sessions, and providing health facilities to the Lt Governor.
