Fate, destiny and free will

Last Updated 04 July 2012, 19:55 IST

People often ask me- how can I meet God? Is it in my destiny or in my will? Meeting God is purely dependent on our own free will.

All of us have free will to a certain extent but it is not enough to meet God.
When we expand the bandwidth of our free will we will get out of the clutches of fate and destiny, and God will be ready to meet us right at that instant.

But we are actually meeting God in different forms each day. Until we are not in the zone of Free Will- we meet God as a doctor, as a friend in need, as the hand that helps us get onto a bus. The stranger who helps us in times of distress is God. We only have to recognize Him. Whenever we have felt peace, comfort and confidence, it means God has helped us. When that confidence comes from some other person, we can be assured it is God giving us that confidence. This has been my own experience for the past 16 years.

To develop and expand that free will, we should stop worrying about the state of our being, whatever it is. We should stop trying to please our family, friends, society and just please our Self, please God. How to do that?  I say- just take care of your Soul through meditation and simple living.

Live with heightened awareness that ‘I will live according to God’s Will to get His grace’. That itself will take care of all circumstances in our life.  We should always remember that we are positive and divine. Whatever be the problems- mental, medical, moral, physical- we will continue to live peacefully when we allow God to help us. The basic mistake that most of us do is to compare ourselves with others. Comparing ourselves with others kills the spirit- do not compare.

When we stop doing that we start the process of rejuvenation, of healing ourselves. That is the significance of the beautiful prayer- ‘Tamaso maa Jyotirgamaya’ ... Take me from darkness to the eternal light. This prayer says that we always want to be positive, lively, energetic, with the power of our Soul, which is divine. It says God is our friend. Let us learn to make God Himself our friend, get out of the clutches of Fate and Destiny and expand our free will. Let us meet God with our free will today and everyday for the rest of our lives.
