A couple was buried alive when the mud wall of their house collapsed on them on Thursday evening at Ambedkarnagar.

The dead are D V Venkatesh, 45 and his wife Narayanamma, 35. They hailed from V Kote in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh and had come to the City five years ago. The couple had five children.

On Thursday, Venkatesh and Narayanamma were taking an afternoon nap in the only room in the house when the accident occurred. Their eldest daughter Eshwaramma, 21, who recently completed her graduation, was washing clothes in a neighbouring house where she worked as a domestic help.

The other two sisters Padma, 17, and Shobha, 14, were also out working as domestic helps.
The house belongs to one Kumar and he had rented it out to the family. It was a shed-like dilapidated structure, almost 70 years old. Alooramanna, brother of Kumar, had recently started to build his house next to this old building.  The new building was being built using hollow blocks. There was a four inch gap between the new cement wall and the old mud wall. The gap was packed with sand and debris and the new wall was being watered to strengthen the structure.

All these had put pressure on the mud wall which finally gave way, killing the couple, on Thursday.  “My mother was taking rest as she was not feeling well. My father was also taking a nap. All of a sudden we heard a loud noise and found my parents buried alive.
Later, the police and the people retrieved the bodies. We have been orphaned now,” Eshwaramma, recounted the horror to Deccan Herald.
