<p>The National Military Memorial (NMM) is not likely to be completed before the end of this year. <br /><br /></p>.<p>Even as the retired and the serving armed forces personnel and the families of the martyrs await with bated breath for the NMM to be opened in honour of the fallen comrades and for the public to pay their tributes, BDA officials have said that the project will be delayed a little longer. <br /><br />According to the officials, the tender approval for the Veera Gallu is languishing at the government level for the past six months.<br /><br />BDA officials claim that the approval for the tender of the monolithic structure, the main attraction of the NMM, has been stuck due to certain technical issues. As a result, hopes of unveiling the memorial on Kargil Diwas (July 26), and in all probabilities on Vijay Diwas (December 26), as a mark of respect to those who have fallen in the line of duty seem highly impossible.<br /><br />“It is likely to take a while before the government gives its approval to the tenders to finalise the Veera Gallu and its ornamenting. Once the approval is given, we will have to transport it from its place of origin to the location, which is stuck at the government level for approval,” a BDA official said. <br /><br />Sources closely associated with the NMM also believe that the inordinate delay by the Cabinet which is caught in the political turmoil, has resulted in the non-completion of the project. <br /><br />Funds awaited<br /><br />“We are waiting for Rs 2 crore for the transportation of the Veera Gallu from Devanahalli to NMM,” said the source.<br /><br />Sources said the pending works include landscaping and other minor works which can be completed in a month’s time, if the monolithic structure is installed. <br /><br />The NMM has started receiving its first list of martyrs’ names to be engraved on the stone plaques. The names of the martyrs engraved on the stone plaques will be installed at the NMM, on the premises of the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain. Segmented by their Regiment affiliations, as many as 22,000 names will adorn the memorial, serving as a proud reminder to the nation of their bravery and courage. <br /><br />Apart from the names of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in protecting the frontiers in the five major wars the country fought, even those personnel who died in counter-insurgency operations have been included. <br /><br />“Since August 16, 1947, all those who have lost their lives in service of the country, across 50 regiments have been engraved on these slabs,” said the spokesperson.<br /></p>
