A 48-year-old woman was allegedly gang raped by eight men in Aligarh district on Sunday. Some women from her village had helped the assailants, according to the victim.
According to reports, a member of the victim’s family, a resident of Kanchanpur village, had eloped with a girl of his own village a few days back. The incident had taken a communal turn as the man and the woman belonged to a different community.
The victim, according to the police officials, was on the way to the fields to get some grass for livestock on Sunday afternoon when she was confronted by some women members of the girl’s family.
The women lured her to the nearby jungles, where a group of men were waiting for her. The women left the scene after handing over the victim to them.
According to reports, it was all pre-planned.
The victim was allegedly gang raped by the men. The victim, who had fainted, regained consciousness in the wee hours of Monday and returned home.
She later approached police and lodged an FIR against 12 people, including three women.
She claimed that she would have been killed but survived as she had fainted and the perpetrators left her thinking that she was dead.
Police officials said the incident was the result of a rivalry between the two families after the elopement.
“We have registered a case and the victim has been sent for medical examination,” an official said.
The culprits have been absconding and a manhunt launched to nab them.
Tension prevailed in the village and security personnel in strength had been deployed there to maintain order.
