'Govt hiding facts about heritage tag'

Last Updated 25 July 2012, 18:16 IST

The government has purposefully withheld information pertaining to the pros and cons of the Unesco world heritage tag for the Western Ghats, alleged JD(S) MLC M C Nanaiah in Legislative Council.

This has unnecessarily created panic among the people of the Ghats, he added.

He wanted to know why the government was opposed to the tag and why the Forest department hadn’t disclosed the information.

The government should make public the Madhav Gadgil report on the Ghats, said Nanaiah.

Forest Minister Yogeeshwara, in his reply, said the government was opposed to the heritage tag.

He said the department was holding consultations with the people of the Ghats. A conclusive decision would be taken after all the stakeholders arrive at a consensus, he added.
