Highlighting a delicate topic

Over the years, there have been several attempts  to spread awareness about the importance of girl child. But spreading this awareness through exhibitions is a trend which is relatively rare in the City.

‘Space for Children in Education Art & Development’ (SCEAD) recently organised a two-day exhibition on ‘Save Girl Child’, at the Bangalore International Academy (BIA).

The focus of the event was female infanticide. The exhibition displayed photos of various women from different walks of life. The photos were taken by photographers from Portugal, China, Taiwan and India and a few students of BIA.

These photos, which capture the problems faced by Indian women, were taken in various parts of the country.

Siju Thomas Daniel, the founder of SCEAD Foundation and the contributing photographer for the exhibition, says that the main purpose of organising the exhibition was to spread the message of gender equality.

“Even some educated couples in the City opt for a male child and abort girls. We want to request people to avoid doing so through this exhibition,” he explains.
The ‘Save Girl Child’ exhibition was attended by hundreds of people from across the City. Young school children were also among these visitors.

There was a separate section of books for these children, which they spent quite a bit of time in.

“The photos displayed are not very professional, but they show the plight of women in India,” says Raghav, a visitor to the exhibition.

Another visitor, Suvarana, adds, “This exhibition is a bit different from other ones. The topic these people have taken up is very delicate. Also, it is quite obvious that a lot of hard work has gone into the entire thing.”

The exhibition also displayed a few quotes and opinions from working women, including a quote from district commissioner of police Sonia Narang.

The ‘Save Girl Child’ exhibition will be organised in different parts of Bangalore.
“We have invited a few photographers from Germany. These international photographers will create a PowerPoint presentation on the women in their country. It will focus on how empowered these women are,” informs Siju.
