Last Updated 08 August 2012, 20:24 IST

The State government is contemplating to withdraw police powers from the Bangalore Metropolitan Task Force (BMTF) in the wake of protests by the BBMP engineers.

The BBMP officers and engineers went on strike on Wednesday demanding the ouster of BMTF ADGP Dr R P Sharma. Sources in the government said the 1996 notification on the formation of the BMTF would be amended and the laws would be changed to snatch police powers from the BBMP's watchdog agency. Court’s ire feared However, there is opposition in the government with some officers saying that the abrupt withdrawal of police powers may draw the court's ire where the charge sheet against the Palike engineers has been filed.  The court may take a serious view of the withdrawal of powers when the investigation is on.
