Sixteen people have been arrested on charges of rioting in Nangloi in west Delhi on Tuesday over a molestation incident.

Two groups had clashed on Tuesday, and several persons, including policemen, were injured, prompting police to use tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
“Some more people are likely to be arrested. We are taking precautionary measures and one company of the force is still deployed in the area,” said V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west).

Officially, only two persons suffered injuries, apart from five policemen. Police had initially said that a number of people were injured, but none were willing to visit the hospital over fear of getting arrested.

Tension began brewing in Budh Vihar Galli on Monday after a woman from one of the groups was allegedly molested outside Nangloi Metro station when she was passing by.
“Immediately, the girl whose relative owns a shop in Budh Vihar arrived with his associates and entered into a scuffle with the men belonging to the other group,” said a senior police officer.

The situation was brought under control and about 25 police personnel were stationed in the area.

However, at 5.30 pm on Tuesday, the situation went out of control again when the two groups began abusing each other and pelting stones.
“Before we knew it, the tension had spread to the entire area. We had to use tear gas shells to bring the crowd under control,” the official added.
People are yet to file a case of molestation as the victim has not come forward to record a statement.

“We will take action if the victim approaches us,” the official said.
