31 school students hurt in Periyapatna mishap

As many as 31 school students were injured when a goods autorickshaw they were travelling in toppled here on Tuesday.

The victims have been identified as the high school students of Handitavalli in the taluk. In all  41 students were returning home after participating in  the hobli-level sports meet at Kittur village.

Severely injured students were administered first aid at the town hospital, before shifting to K R Hospital in Mysore. They are Revanna, Srikanth, Soorya, Ranjita, Manju, Manikanta, Pavan, Prema, Shalini, Suma, Vijaykumar, Umesh, Sharath Kumar, Madhu, Nagamani, Madhushree, Manu, Nagendra, Shanthkumar, Vijaykumar, Anu, Kavya, Divya, Prema, Shruti, Thanya and others.  According to preliminary information, most of the severely injured students have suffered fracture.

The medical staff at the taluk hospital played a good role with even those who had finished their shifts and gone home, returned to the call of emergency and assisted Dr Devendraraj. Apart from 108 ambulances that ferried the injured from the mishap site to taluk hospital,  autorickshaw drivers and good samaritan public lent a helping hand.

The vehicles of a NGO, Mallikarjun and also of St Mary’s Hospital were used to shift the injured to Mysore.

This is a second such incident after the mishap in 2011, where the students of Hunasvadi School had sustained injuries. Block education officer C S Ramalingu and others visited the spot.

TN youth held for theft

Nazarbad police in Mysore have arrested a youth from Tamil Nadu on charge of lifting two-wheelers worth Rs 1.6 lakh in the city.

S Nikhil alias Niki, 19, and resident of Kurubatti, Maththigere post, Hosur taluk, Krishnagiri district in Tamil Nadu is the accused. He had lifted a motorcycle from the parking lot of a hospital near Yaraganahalli circle one week ago. Earlier to this he had lifted the vehicles from Alanahalli, Gayatripuram and Ittigegud.

Police team led by Inspector G N Mohan, sub- inspector H M Madhu among others apprehended the accused.

Dacoity foiled

In a swift operation, Periyapatna police claim to have foiled dacoity plans by nabbing a seven member gang here on Monday. The accused are Anand,Krishna, Chennappa, Arafat and B P Kiran of the State, and Joseph Christie and Kumar of neighbouring Kerala State.
The gang had information about Girish the branch manager of Corporation Bank at Tibetan lama camp at Bylakuppe, transporting  cash to and fro daily. On Monday, Girish was warned by Prakash of Dodda Harave not to bring cash to the bank on the day. Girish informed the police that led to te arrest of the gang. The police have also recovered weapons and vehicles fro the accused. However, Vittal another member of the gang has made good his escape.

The operation was led by circle inspector P V Venkatesh, sub-inspector Jayalakshman among others.
