HSR Layout walks the green talk

Last Updated 01 September 2012, 18:24 IST

The residents of HSR Layout turned out in large numbers Saturday morning for a four-km walkathon organised as part of ‘HSR Goes Green’ campaign to create awareness on segregating waste at source.

The Layout residents have initiated several measures to ensure systematic garbage disposal. Starting next week, a BBMP van will collect dry waste every Monday and Thursday.

At present, wet waste is being sent to Jayanagar organic waste management plant.

However, the HSR Layout will have its own plant in the next two months.

Vegetable vendors have been given cloth and paper bags and all the plastic bags in their possession are likely to be seized next week.

“We have been working on garbage segregation for the last one year. We set up a dry waste collection centre six months ago and collected 70,000 kg of waste.

A non-governmental organisation will recycle the waste,” said local corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy.

The corporator said she had instructed the pourakarmikas to mark the houses which do not segregate waste.

Health inspectors will be sent to such houses to convince residents on the need for waste segregation, she added.

The corporator said it had also been planned to enrol self help groups to manufacture cloth and paper bags.

BJP Lok Sabha member Ananthkumar and Bommanahalli legislator M Satish Reddy also took part in the walkathon.
