<p>The residents of HSR Layout turned out in large numbers Saturday morning for a four-km walkathon organised as part of ‘HSR Goes Green’ campaign to create awareness on segregating waste at source.<br /><br /></p>.<p>The Layout residents have initiated several measures to ensure systematic garbage disposal. Starting next week, a BBMP van will collect dry waste every Monday and Thursday. <br /><br />At present, wet waste is being sent to Jayanagar organic waste management plant. <br /><br />However, the HSR Layout will have its own plant in the next two months.<br /><br />Vegetable vendors have been given cloth and paper bags and all the plastic bags in their possession are likely to be seized next week.<br /><br />“We have been working on garbage segregation for the last one year. We set up a dry waste collection centre six months ago and collected 70,000 kg of waste. <br /><br />A non-governmental organisation will recycle the waste,” said local corporator Latha Narasimhamurthy.<br /><br />The corporator said she had instructed the pourakarmikas to mark the houses which do not segregate waste.<br /><br /> Health inspectors will be sent to such houses to convince residents on the need for waste segregation, she added.<br /><br />The corporator said it had also been planned to enrol self help groups to manufacture cloth and paper bags.<br /><br />BJP Lok Sabha member Ananthkumar and Bommanahalli legislator M Satish Reddy also took part in the walkathon.</p>
