As citizens of the ‘Garden City’ still grapple with the garbage menace on their streets, the generally quiet neighbourhood of the defence sectors in the City are also concerned about the ‘mismanagement’ of the solid waste in the City.

Speaking to the media, Air Commodore Dharam Vir on Monday said that the Indian Air Force will have interactions and distribute literature to citizens, at their upcoming exhibition on September 8 and 9, to raise awareness about the garbage menace and the subsequent impact on Indian Air Force due to bird hits.

“We are looking at raising the awareness on the general aerospace safety which has been plagued by bird hits due to the problems of garbage.

While there has been a general reduction in the number of bird hits at our Yelahanka airbase, it is important to provide certain information to the civilians on this issue,” Dharam Vir said.

However, he added that the use of new technology and other steps by IAF officers have been effective in curtailing the problems pertaining to bird hits.

The IAF personnel are worried over the disposal of animal carcasses in Razaakpalya with the Aeroshow 2013 fast approaching.

“We believe temporary measures will be taken to cover the fish tanks. The problems are generally on account of the the birds which prey on them,” said a senior IAF personnel.

The Air Commodore said that the IAF has been contemplating plans to break into smaller groups across their bases in the City to spread knowledge about the garbage menace.

The IAF personnel state that their annual garbage contracts help them in clearing the waste from their bases.

“We, of course, do not know the arrangement of the contractor with the local administration.

As far as the contractors here are concerned, we impose fines on them if they are unable to clear the garbage from our facilities and bases,” said the IAF personnel.
