Devotees offer blood to temple

Last Updated 28 September 2009, 18:11 IST

Thakurs belonging to the “srinet” clan, do not sacrifice animals. During the navaratras, the male members of the clan arrive in groups at the temple, constructed by their forefathers, and offer their own blood.

This year also, the members of the clan offered their blood at the deity on “Mahanavami” (the ninth day of navaratra) on Sunday. The temple is situated in Bansgaon town, about 45 km from Gorakhpur.

“The devotees, comprising the members of the clan, seek blessings of the goddess for continuation of their clan and for their peace and prosperity,” former block president of Bansgaon, Ashtabhuja Singh, himself a “srinet thakur,” said.

He said earlier the clan members used to sacrifice animals at the temple to “please” the deity. A grand celebration is organised during the navaratras at the temple.
