A 65-year-old woman, who was a retired assistant income tax commissioner, was found dead under mysterious conditions at her Rohini residence of outer Delhi on Wednesday afternoon.

Her hands and legs were tied with rope and the house was ransacked, police said.
She has been identified as Gurjeet Kaur, 65, who used to live alone at her D-Block flat in Rohini sector 8. According to Mohammad Akhtar Rizvi, additional deputy commissioner of police (outer), the death came to light when her domestic help arrived around 4 pm.

“The domestic help found the main door of the house open and Gurjeet’s hands and legs tied to a chair. We suspect that she was gagged, bound and strangled,” another senior police official said.

Investigators are waiting for the forensic investigation report. “The exact cause of the death will be clear only after post-mortem is conducted,” the official added.

Gurjeet’s domestic help had immediately informed the woman’s neighbours and a doctor for checkup. The doctor, however, declared her dead, upon which a call was made to the police control room.

A team of crime branch police inspected the house and prima facie it appears that the assailants made a friendly entry into the house and attacked Gurjeet while trying to escape with valuables.

“A case of murder has been registered at Rohini North police station. The house is ransacked, but we are investigating the case from all possible angles,” Rizvi said.
Gurjeet had employed two domestic helps in her house. According to sources, one of the domestic helps has gone missing and police are trying to trace her.

The elderly woman’s husband died four years back. Out of her three children, a son lives in the United States while two daughters are living in east Delhi. All the children are married.

Police have informed her family members and preserved the body for post-mortem at Dr B R Ambedkar Hospital. Cops are presently questioning the victim’s domestic help and neighbours to get some clues.
