Awestruck by illusion

It was a true delite for Delhiites last weekend as the sophisticated sleight of hand coupled with drizzle came their way. Various national and international magicians cast a spell of illusion, taking the audience by surprise and leaving them amused.

Second edition of the Magic Festival, organised by Delhi Tourism in association with Indian Brotherhood of Magicians at Pitam Pura Dilli Haat, opened with a sensuous dance and magic show by Kristy from Ukraine. Using props like walking stick, chair and her stilettos, she demonstrated some fine tricks. Gorgeous Kristy, who performed in India for the first time, was as much appreciated for her sensuous chair dance as magical tricks.

Then came Canada’s eminent magician Eric Leclerc, who is a master at children and comic acts. As known for, he involved the audience in the performance by interacting with them. A huge applause came his way, as amid his nonsensical talk, he managed to make a scarf vanish from his hand and then brought it back along with a bird. Reacting to the positive response, he later commented, “It is an honour to perform in Delhi. It is very different performing here. l love the way people cheer and create buzz.”

The festival was inaugurated by Kiran Walia. “The magic festival has been taken forward to another edition because people of all age groups enjoy it. It brings a  smile on everybody’s face. It is being done at Pitam Pura Dilli Haat but will be organised at INA Dilli Haat too,” she said.

Local magicians too put in fun-filled and fascinating acts. Rahul Kharbanda, who is better known as a dancer-magician, demonstrated a captivating show along with co-magicians. They left the audience awestruck as a rod pierced through a girl’s stomach and she started walking normally after a few seconds.

Each of the three days saw a gala show by national and international magicians, magic teaching classes for children, performances by senior magicians and competitions for younger magicians.

This year’s magic festival had the addition of a pictorial exhibition on the history of magic worldwide. On display were stalls selling magic books, mugs, kits etc. The festival also comprised a lecture on magic and its history which was conducted by magicians Bhargav, Swami Sarkar etc. The festival concluded with a grand illusion show by magician brothers.
The event saw huge crowds flowing in to get a glimpse of the magic show at the amphitheater in the haat.
