Two men have been arrested for cheating several retired and serving government engineers on the pretext of providing consultancy jobs with private companies. They collected over Rs 20 lakh in the last eight to 10 months, police said on Tuesday.
Virender Kumar, 47, of Karala and Mahender Pal, 52, of Burari were held in Siddharth Hotel at Rajender Place over a complaint by Rani Bagh resident Ramesh Chander. They used to take Rs 50,000 to Rs 6.50 lakh from each victim.
“Ramesh along with other victims had lodged their complaints with Karol Bagh police station, alleging that some unknown persons had cheated them of several lakh of rupees,” said Devesh Chandra Srivastva, additional commissioner of police (central).
They claimed that the accused used to fix meetings at hotels in Karol Bagh for discussion of terms and conditions of the jobs and projects involved. Then one of the accused used to become friendly with the victim.
“The accused used to say he could arrange high-consultancy commission from their boss and would ask them to give one per cent advance money as commission. On this, the victim used to give a portion of the total project amount,” Srivastva added.
On Monday, a police team busted the racket with the arrest of Virender and Mahender. Virender said he and his younger brother Mahesh, and his two nephews Yash Kapoor and Manish Kapoor, used to commit the crime.
