An uneasy calm prevails in Haryana’s village Dabra where irate villagers, accusing the police of inaction, have set a two-day deadline till Wednesday for the police to arrest all 11 suspects involved in gang rape of a class XII Dalit girl on September 8.

Unable to come to terms with the incident, Krishan, the girl’s father and a daily wager, had committed suicide on September 18.

The police on Monday said they have arrested    one of the accused and assured that the others would be behind the bars shortly.

Villagers, who demonstrated in large numbers on roads on Sunday, threaten to take to the streets if the police fail to bring all those accused in the incident to justice.

There’s outrage over the incident at the National Commission for Women, while the state’s major opposition party the INLD has asked for arrests of all those involved.

The police, meanwhile, have assured villagers that they would do everything possible to nail the culprits.

The teenage Dalit girl, who was gang-raped while she was on her way to meet her uncle in the district, reported the incident to her mother.

A derogatory MMS has been in circulation portraying pictures of the girl.
