Two rebels, soldier killed in Handwara encounter

At least two militants and a soldier were killed in a fierce gun battle in Handwara area of north Kashmir’s frontier district of Kupwara on Tuesday.

Police said two unidentified militants and one Army personnel were killed in an encounter with police and Army’s 30 Rashtriya Rifles in Handwara, 80 kms from here.

“During the intervening night of September 24 and 25 police along with 30-RR launched a search operation in village Haril Manzpora, Handwara. The militants fired upon the search party which was retaliated triggering an encounter in which two militants were killed,” a police spokesperson said in a statement. He said jawan Sandeep Kumar of 30 RR was also killed in the encounter. Police claimed to have recovered two AK 47 rifles and six AK magazines from the slain militants.
