Discom to pay Rs 2K for giving incorrect bill

BSES Yamuna Power Ltd has been directed by a consumer forum to pay Rs 2,000 as compensation to a customer for sending him an incorrect bill of nearly Rs 4 lakh.

The north district consumer disputes redressal forum rejected the discom’s argument that the complainant is not entitled to any relief as the bill was corrected.  The forum said BSES made the correction after the complaint was filed.

“The complaint was filed by Om Prakash on April 10. The bill was corrected on July 17, and the final bill came to Rs 2,720, which has already been paid by Prakash. It is clear that BYPL had raised an incorrect bill, which Prakash was not liable to pay,” the forum said.

Since he had to go for litigation to get the bill corrected, he is entitled for compensation, it added.

“We direct BYPL to pay Rs 2,000 to Prakash by way of cost and compensation,” the bench said.

Om Parkash, who runs a small shop in north Delhi, said the discom had sent a notice on November 30 last year, alleging he was unauthorisedly supplying electricity to a nearby premises where power connection had been disconnected since 2005 for not paying dues.

The discom had transferred the unpaid dues of the nearby premises to his account, and had raised a demand of Rs 3,99,500 from him on January 3.
