With the construction of a hi-tech fish and meat market in Chikmagalur, the long-pending demands of the consumers in Chikmagalur has been met.

The market complex has come up in Santhe maidan on Market road.

Fish, chicken and mutton will be available under one roof for the consumers.  The complex will have 42 stalls and is built at a cost of Rs 1.35 crore.

The market will be inaugurated by District-in-Charge Minister D N Jeevraj and Higher Education Minister C T Ravi on October 16.

Fourteen fishermen and butchers who were selling fish and meat near Santhe maidan and market road will be shifted to the new market. The remaining stalls will be auctioned by the CMC.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, CMC Commissioner H G Prabhakar said “the CMC had decided to bring fish and meat markets under one roof to maintain cleanliness. The fish and meat stalls on Market road, Vijayapura, Mallandoor road will be shifted to the newly built market.”

The CMC is also planning to construct similar hi-tech markers at Gavanahalli, Ramanahalli, Uppahalli, Housing Board and Hiremagalur.

“The CMC is collecting the waste from the fish and meat stalls. The water from the stalls will flow to the drainage. The CMC will appoint a security guard to the market.”

Communist Party of India (CPI) leader B Amjad said “the construction of a hi-tech market was a good decision taken by the CMC. However, Chikmagalur city has expanded.

It is not right to restrict the sale of fish and meat at one place. There is a need to construct a few more such markets in Chikmagalur city or else the consumers will be put to hardship.”
