East Corporation to jazz up its garbage trucks

In order to improve garbage collecting mechanism and check sanitation workers from bunking duty, the East Delhi Municipal Corporation has decided to give a makeover to garbage-clearing trucks.

EDMC will paint all its sanitation vehicles green, apart from numbering them and putting the corporation’s logo for easy identification.

“At present it is difficult to say which trucks are on duty and which are not because it is not easy to identify them.

Once the vehicles are painted with a uniform colour and the numbering is done, the sanitation staff would know that a truck with a particular number is plying on a certain road,” said a senior EDMC official.

“It will also be easy for the public to identify a corporation truck. Even if people want to file a complaint, they can complain specifically about a particular truck,” the official added.

According to officials, on several occasions, crew in the area were found avoiding work, and sanitation workers sometimes pick up garbage only from areas closer to landfills.
While EDMC owns 67 trucks, it has taken around 50 more on rent.

For better efficiency, it has decided to procure 70 more trucks and the order for 30 has already been placed with Ashok Leyland. Orders for the rest 40 will be placed by December this year.

“The company will deliver the 30 trucks by December-end. Several of the existing trucks have outlived their life. The old trucks will be replaced by the new ones gradually,” said a senior corporation official.

With the procurement of new trucks, a total of 190 vehicles will collect garbage from 64 wards in east Delhi.

Since the area predominantly consists of unauthorised colonies, where
narrow bylanes make it impossible for trucks to ply, EDMC also employs 160
auto-tippers.
