One from State among five missing crew

Last Updated 01 November 2012, 19:15 IST

A day after tropical cyclone ‘Nilam’ moved away, five crew members of a grounded ship ‘Pratibha Cauvery’, just off the Marina beach here, were still missing on Thursday, even as a rescue mission by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) bailed out 15 others, including officers, safely early today.

Amid the persisting rough seas and strong winds on day two after ‘Nilam’, the ICG in a swift early morning mission on Thursday, aided by Navy divers besides their Dornier rescue helicopters, safely pulled out 15 still on-board, including the ship’s captain Fernandez, and admitted them  to a private hospital. There were in all 37 crew on-board the vessel.

“Be on the ship! This is what we told the 15 remaining crew on-board, after our efforts to rescue them Wednesday night turned futile,” the ICG’s DIG (South), Gurupdesh Singh, told reporters here.
