Delhi Police on Friday made the third arrest in the killing of a constable when he was chasing members of notorious ‘Mewati Gang’ in Bharat Nagar area of north west Delhi in May.

Shakir, 27, a Faridabad resident with a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, was held near Pragati Maidan. He is the brother of one of the accused in the November 2010 Dhaula Kuan rape case.

“Shakir has been charged for murder of constable Naresh Kumar, who was posted with Bharat Nagar police station. He is the third accused arrested after Arif and Sukha,” said S B S Tyagi, deputy commissioner of police (crime and railways).

Constable Naresh along with Shankar, a home guard, was patrolling the streets during the wee hours of May 17 when a message was flashed over the wireless that some criminals of Mewati Gang were passing through Netaji Subhash Place in a mini-truck.

Police personnel from different posts chased them for two to three kilometers until they reached Bharat Nagar police station. From there Naresh and Shankar sped after the truck on a motorcycle and overtook it.

When the criminals noticed the bike in front, they rammed into it due to which Naresh suffered head injuries and died on the spot. Shankar suffered critical injuries and was taken to Shankar Lal Hospital for treatment.

Tyagi said Shakir was held after credible information was received that a member of the gang involved would come near Matka Pir Dargah near Pragati Maidan during the wee hours of Friday to meet his accomplice.

“A trap was laid and Shakir was apprehended at 5.40 am,” Tyagi added. During interrogation he told police that the gang was stealing cows for slaughter on the day of the incident.
