“We are looking for technological tie ups with overseas firms, who have pioneered in producing components for manufacture of improved versions of electric scooters,” BSA Motors, Vice President, K B Srinivasan told newspersons while launching series of electric two wheelers here.

However, he did not elaborate on overseas firms with which BSA Motors was seeking tie up for technology transfer. “Presently, the indigenous contents of electric scooters made by us stand at 20 per cent. We plan to raise the level to 70 per cent through the proposed technology tie up,” Srinivasan said.

The BSA Motors, which is a strategic business unit of the Tube Investment of India under the Murugappa Group, will make further investment over and above of Rs 30 crore already made for using state-of-art components for producing “more efficient” electric scooters, he said.  “We are also working on further strengthening our vendor network to procure quality components on regular basis to meet the growing demand for electric scooters,” he said.

The BSA Motors’ Ambattur plant in Chennai has an initial production capacity of 150 electric scooters a day, Srinivasan said. L Ramkumar, MD, Tube Investments of India, said “our electric scooters have been well accepted all over the Southern India where it was launched a year back. Banking on this success we are now expanding into the northern part of the country.” “ BSA Motors currently has over 70 dealerships. We plan to ramp up to 132 dealership across the country by March 2010,” he said.
