The Malleswaram police on Wednesday registered a case of negligence against the management of Cluney Convent in Malleswaram in connection with the injury to special child Nandini on Tuesday. Ten-year-old Nandini was badly injured on the face when a slide crashed on her at the school.

The police registered a case following a complaint by Nandini’s father B Mohan Kumar that his daughter was injured due to the negligence of the school authorities.

Kumar told Deccan Herald that he was shocked by the “negligence” of a school meant for special children. The management did not even call him to discuss the incident.

He said that although some teachers had called him and enquired about the child's condition, none turned up at the hospital. “Shockingly, the school authorities are blaming us for dropping the child five minutes before the long bell. A teacher said she was least bothered about what happened before the long bell. Nandini is a special child who needs special care from the teachers.”

Denies charges

However, in its statement to the police, the school management described the incident unfortunate and accidental and denied allegations of apathy and negligence. They said they rushed Nandini to the hospital and took complete care of her.

They said they removed the slide that crashed on the girl and stepped up safety measures on the campus. Personnel have been appointed to look after the children on the campus, it said.

According to Kumar, doctors conducted a surgery on Nandini on Wednesday. They have restructured the severely damaged nasal bone and fixed plates to support the jaws as both the cheek bones were badly fractured. She is now on liquid diet.

Aravind Kasargod, head of medical services, Columbia Asia Hospital, Yeshwantpur, told Deccan Herald that the child had undergone a plastic surgery for the facial injuries and was recovering.
