It is believed that buying gold, silver or other articles bring luck and growth in homes, offices and business establishments on this auspicious day, writes Gayathri V Raj.

I it is time again to celebrate the festival of lights - Deepavali, which brings happiness and prosperity. While the festival is much-awaited by the children who want to spend a gala time burning crackers with friends and family, the womenfolk are busy preparing sweets to share with neighbours and friends.

The shops selling readymade garments and textiles can be seen overflowing with customers during the season. Most important of all are the jewellery shops that are luring customers by offering fabulous discounts and introducing new schemes as part of Dhanteras, which falls on Sunday.

On Dhanteras day it is believed to bring home new gold and silver jewellery, utensils to bring home luck and please the goddess of wealth Dhan-Lakshmi. The festival is celebrated two days before the Deepavali. The word ‘Dhan’ means wealth and ‘Tera’ means the date 13th.

People flock the jewellery showrooms to buy gold and silver jewellery or utensils to celebrate the occasion. Many wear new clothes and jewellery as they light the lamp arranged in front of the houses and once lighted give a divine look to the whole atmosphere.

Idol worship

Some who are deep-rooted in religious beliefs also bring home the idols of goddess Lakshmi and Ganesha, to increase wealth success and growth at house, offices and business organisation.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Dilip Hegde, Marketing manager of a renwoned jewellery showroom in city said the showroom is attractively decorated as part of Dhanteras and Deepavali, which is celebrated to welcome goddess Lakshmi.

The rise in gold rate has not dampened the spirits of the gold buyers and the heavy rush in the showroom is the proof of this, he says.

Many who were waiting for the gold rate to subside have decided to purchase the precious gold metal this festive season fearing that the prices may see an upward trend.

As part of the festival they have come out with an unique earring mela, where different types of earrings weighing from one gram and above are available.

The designs include traditional and contemporary with a lot of variety to choose from, he adds.

Not only gold, even the four-wheeler traders are announcing huge discount and special offers that comes with a special prize for those who buy cars and some others offering free gold coins for every purchase of more than Rs one lakh.
