The family members of a man, mowed down by a rashly-driven car in 2010, has been awarded a compensation of nearly Rs 28 lakhs by a Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) here.

MACT Presiding Officer B S Chumbak directed United India Insurance Company Ltd, with which the offending vehicle was insured, to pay the amount to the victim's family.

"I, accordingly, grant a compensation to the tune of Rs 27,98,016 to all the petitioners with interest at 7.5 percent per annum from the date of filing of the petition till its realisation minus the amount of interim compensation, if any and interest excepted if any," the tribunal said.

The order came on a petition filed by family members of 30-year-old Aman Sarin, who was working at mechanical service engineering department of Hitachi Home and Life Solutions (India) Ltd and had died due to injuries sustained in the road mishap.

Sarin's wife had told the court that her husband was going to attend an official assignment on his two wheeler on June 5, 2010. When he reached near Shakarpur in East Delhi, a rashly-driven Maruti van hit his scooter due to which he received grievous injuries, she added.

She further said Sarin was rushed to a nearby hospital but died on June 30 during treatment.

The driver and owner of the offending vehicle refuted all allegations against them and said no such accident took place.

The tribunal, however, rejected the plea of the driver and owner of the van and directed the insurance firm to pay the compensation to the family members of the deceased.
