Protest: BBMP to test lake water

Last Updated 08 October 2009, 20:17 IST

Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has initiated a series of measures to address the woes of Mavallipuram villagers, who are facing a lot of problems due to garbage dumping in the vicinity.

A meeting was held by the BBMP Commissioner, Bharatlal Meena, and attended by the Ramky garbage management facility officials.

“We have already begun planting nearly 1,000 saplings in the village and will begin fogging and spraying process shortly,” said a Palike official.  Mavallipuram, in the recent past, had reported numerous cases of Chikungunya. Unhygienic conditions around the dumping yard is believed to be the main reason for this.

This apart, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike  will be testing the water in the nearby lake that has allegedly been polluted because of the release of high toxic content. Compensation will be paid to those who have suffered losses. This will be done after assessment.

Study of hazards

“We have also decided to post an additional health inspector in the Yelahanka Zone for the Mavallipuram village to study the health hazards and provide relief accordingly,” the official said.

On the villagers’ demand to shift the Mavallipuram garbage dumping yard, the Palike has categorically stated no such action will be taken.

Government land

“The land was recommended and given to us by the government to carry out waste disposal. There is no question of moving the dumping yard and closing the Ramky facility in Mavallipuram,” said the official.

Case against villagers

The Palike has also filed a case against two villagers, Srinivas and Dhanraj for allegedly assaulting the Joint Commissioner (Yelahanka), Virupaksha Mysore and Executive Engineer Rangaiah on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, to ease the load on the Mavalli Garbage dumping yard, the BBMP has approved a tender to ensure that at least 20 percent of the current garbage load to Mavallipuram will be shifted to Tera Farm, the waste management company in Doddaballapur.
