A man, who jumped bail and later produced a fake death certificate to avoid being prosecuted for having committed a rape, was arrested from Jaipur, police said on Monday.

Subhash was first arrested in 2007 in connection with a rape case lodged at Kapashera in south west Delhi and later sent to judicial custody. He got bail and never appeared in court again, deputy commissioner of police (south west) A K Ojha said .

Police said that after getting bail, he stopped appearing in the court and surety amount was deposited repeatedly in lieu of his non-appearances.

His relatives produced his death certificate along with a declaration that he had gone to Nepal after being granted bail and died enroute. His relatives also claimed that his body was cremated in Nepal.

The story narrated by his relatives made police officials suspicious. Subsequently, the court ordered to check the authenticity of his death certificate in 2010.

“A police team carried out a detailed verification, contacted a number of Subhash’s relatives and also met a number of people residing near his family home,” said Ojha.

During verification, police found that Subhash’s family –  his mother and married brother-- had vacated their ancestral house in Jhajjar.

During investigation, his mother was traced to Churu in Rajasthan while his brother, Virender, was found living with his wife at Hari Nagar in west Delhi. Subhash was traced to Jaipur on Sunday where he was living under a new name, Monu.
