Manasi, the psychology association of Jyoti Nivas College, recently celebrated its fest — ‘Happiness, Cheer and Exuberance’ — with the aim of spreading the message of positive mental health and well-being. As part of the fest, the department of psychology organised an array of vibrant events for the students as well as the staff to participate in.

The principal of Jyoti Nivas College, Sr Elizabeth C S, having been a psychology student herself, was very enthusiastic about the proceedings and stressed the importance of general well-being — both physical and mental.

Resonating across the corridors of the college, the one chant that overpowered all the others was ‘positive thoughts, positive results’.

The students put up a colourful display of charts and models that represented various concepts and theories of the subject, followed by a walkathon across the campus.  “A lot of effort was put in by the students and it was truly wonderful to be around them. Their youthful energy was uplifting and motivating for those who participated,” says Usha Joyappa, head of the psychology department of the college.

Interestingly, the students even got speakers from the field to come and talk about the cause of mental health. The most influential was Diptarup Choudhury, from the NIMHANS unit of Positive Mental Health and Well-being.

“The essence is to maintain the magic ratio — which is 3:1 — between positivity and negativity. In life, we should try to increase positivity but at the same time, learn to accept negativity,” he explains.  For the students themselves, it was a fun experience to witness a day dedicated only to happiness and positive thinking.

“I enjoy psychology and always like to participate in such events. I want to help spread awareness about positive mental health,” expresses Sindhu, a first-year BA student who participated in the proceedings.

The festivities culminated on an energetic note with ‘Cheerful Strides’, a ramp walk that showcased the talents of the students as well as the faculty at spreading happiness and joy among others.
