MPs worried over channel content

Last Updated 18 December 2012, 20:25 IST

Lok Sabha MPs, irrespective of their political affiliations, on Tuesday expressed concern over the contents of certain news channels with some of them emphasising the need to evolve a regulatory mechanism for media.

The government has so far maintained that self-regulation by the broadcasters would be the best way to make it sure that the TV channels did not air any objectionable content.

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Information and Broadcasting, Manish Tewari, however, said that the government was ready for a wider discussion on the sensitive issue in the Lok Sabha and would act in accordance with the sense of the House.

The issue came up during the Question Hour when All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen MP Asaduddin Owaisi referred to the sting operation carried out by Congress MP Naveen Jindal’s company that purportedly exposed the alleged bid by Zee TV to blackmail the firm and secure an advertisement contract worth Rs 100 crore.
