Fashion that doesn't work

Faux Pas

Bangalore has always been known to host many events — and for the fashion flaunted by the people that attend them. But in the name of ‘style’, there have been a lot of fashion disasters — from a fur coat in a rock concert in the summer, to the skimpiest of spaghettis in the winter. Metrolife speaks to some youngsters about their thoughts on this matter.

Whether it’s the excess of make up or a case of under-doing or over-doing the clothes, some have been witness to more fashion disasters than others. “I have seen a guy wearing a denim shirt, brown cargoes, white socks and red loafers! Guys wearing Bob Marley hats and oh-so-cool denim capris with socks and floaters do not work either,” says Rohan Pereira, a young professional.

He adds, “Girls shouldn’t wear little black dresses to rock concerts like ‘Metallica’! At least wear a T-shirt with that. And they should wear something they’re comfortable in when they go out. If you’re constantly adjusting your clothes at an outing, it’s probably not worth it.”

From a female perspective, Sonshu Iyengar, a fashion blogger, shares her thoughts. “According to me, some of the biggest fashion disasters I’ve seen in Bangalore are when people say they are colour-blocking and wear colours which are completely horrendous together. Also, I really don’t find anything appealing about low-waist jeans and not to forget, peek-a-boo bra straps that come off as very ‘wannabe’.”

Pranika Kapur has her own notion of Bangalore fashion faux pas. “One of the most common fashion disasters I have come across in Bangalore is that a lot of people wear sweaters and jackets even though it isn’t exactly cold. Then, we have the cool dudes and chicks who wear chappals anywhere and everywhere they go. Whatever happened to the love for shoes?” she questions.

“Another major disaster is girls being in one colour from top to bottom, including accessories! When girls wear skimpy dresses with the transparent or bright coloured bra straps showing, they need to be told how tacky it looks,” she adds. In an age where one should be confident in what they wear, regardless of the notion of conformity, it is important to be conscious of what is suitable to be worn where. It isn’t about following a trend blindly, but setting your own ones, in an appropriate way.
