Learn to be a good host

PARTY TIPS
Last Updated 20 December 2012, 13:49 IST

Being a good guest isn’t difficult. In fact, it’s quite easy. All you need to carry with you is a big smile and sometimes a bouquet.

We’ve all been host or hostess to someone from time to time and we all know how the story goes. If you expect your guests to enjoy themselves, don’t make them feel as though they have overstayed their welcome, even if they have. So, for becoming a good host one needs to keep few tips in mind.

For a special occasion like Christmas and New Year bash, we need to pull up our socks and revive the party manners we learnt. How to make someone feel welcome in our home is an art in itself. It requires charm, hospitality, warmth and graciousness.

According to Kavita Ashok, an etiquette guru, organising a party is not difficult at all. “All we need is a concrete planning, create a compatible guest list, organise food and drinks, send invites and a dozen other things.

Actually it is not a herculean task, all you have to do is pull your skills and qualities together and you can churn up a beautiful party. The most precious element is your guest and if you succeed in making them feel welcome and comfortable you are an ace host.”

The basic step is to plan a list of compatible people. Mention if kids are invited, at times it becomes embarrassing if the guests tag along their children to find it’s an adults only gathering. Send your invites in advance. Let your guests know if you have a theme or dress code in mind.

Also be ready ahead of time. The table should be laid and one should be dressed before the guests arrive. It is very rude to be shabbily dressed when the guests
arrive.

“Remain calm, relax a few minutes before the guests arrive. The host’s mood sets the rhythm of a party. Even if someone breaks a glass, spills red wine on your best tablecloth, do not panic,” adds Kavita.

Check the toilets are clean and there is soap and toilet paper. Arrange a room freshener and change your bed covers. All rooms need to be presentable not just the drawing room. Be mindful: Keep an eye on whether there are enough snacks and drinks. If someone is feeling left out it’s your job as a host to introduce him to people and get the conversations flowing.

Keep the pets away from the main area of the party as some people are scared and someone may be allergic. Indicate the guests when the food is ready and laid. Lastly, appreciate, thank all for being there and always believe in the evergreen Indian hospitality belief – Atithi Devo Bhav.
