The police have booked a youth, reportedly Akali Dal youth wing leader, and his accomplices for assaulting an officer of the rank of senior superintendent of police in Ludhiana. The incident took place on Monday night.

The victim S S Mand, who holds charge as AIG (counter intelligence), underwent a surgery at a hospital in Ludhiana on Tuesday after he sustained severe injuries following the attack.

Case registered

The police have registered a case of attempt to murder against the accused Sunny Johar.
The assault took place following an altercation.

The incident evoked sharp reactions from the opposition Congress in the state.

Force demoralised

Punjab Congress president Captain Amarinder Singh said that the police would be demoralised if the officers are mistreated by Akalis.

He said that there were instances when an Akali leader killed an ASI and thrashed a traffic cop.

“Now a senior police officer of the rank of an SSP has been beaten up in full public view in Ludhiana with his leg broken,” he said.

The Congress president claimed that the police took almost 24 hours to register a case against the accused.
