Balance or imbalance?

Last Updated 12 October 2009, 17:28 IST

Tight rope walkers employ a stick or at least extend their arms to balance themselves. Even a little over weight on one side or shifting could cause an imbalance which is off set by the long stick one holds in the hand. Sometimes I wonder if in life also we need to keep a proper balance as we face different trying situations.
What keeps me in the right balance? Is it my cleverness? Am I so astute as to survive all that comes up against me all by myself? Is there perhaps some external help available for me in all such situations? The answer is: yes. There is and God tells you that I am there for you.

Besides many books in the Bible the book of Psalms is replete with many sayings to this effect, perhaps, just one example would be enough here: “As for me, I am poor and needy, but the Lord takes thought for me. You are my help and my deliverer; do not delay, O my God.” (Ps 40.17).

Here is another beautiful verse God says that he cares for you and looks after you in all troubles and trials: “The eyes of the Lord are on those who love him, a mighty shield and strong support, a shelter from scorching wind and a shade from noonday sun, a guard against stumbling and a help against falling. He lifts up the soul and makes the eyes sparkle; he gives health and life and blessing” (Sirach 34. 19-20).
So in all the situations where you need balancing he would be there to guide you, guard you but remember it is you who has to walk the ropes.

There could also be times when we are almost on the verge of despair. Depression may be round the corner to get hold of me. In all such situations I need the balancing act and it is God who provides it if but I ask for it in earnest prayer. I should also remember that it is friends and relatives themselves who would at times help us to balance but even if they fail there is one who would not fail and that is the mother of our Lord Jesus Christ.
A certain prayer addressed to Mary has it: “Remember O Virgin Mary that never was it known that anybody who had recourse to you was left unaided.” So turn to Mary in deep faith and she will pray for you and obtain the balance and the peace that you need in such a critical situation. You need not plunge into such misery when Divine help is promised and so close at hand.
