Feeling humiliated after allegedly being gang raped by four youths, a woman set herself ablaze in Uttar Pradesh’s Deoria district. She is now battling for life at hospital.

According to reports, the victim, who had come to her parents’ home, was abducted by four persons, when she had gone out to  attend nature’s call on the night of January 23 and was taken to a secluded spot where the culprits gang raped her.

Police said the culprits, who remain unidentified, could be her neighbours.

The victim after returning home poured kerosene over her body and set herself ablaze. By the time her parents rushed to her room and doused the flames she had already suffered extensive burns, a police source said.

She was taken to hospital and after regaining consciousness on Monday she told her parents about the incident. The victim, who had been married barely a few months ago, also gave her statement to police at the hospital.

According to doctors, she has suffered 70 per cent burns.

A case has been registered and a manhunt has been launched to nab the culprits, police said.

The incident comes close on the heels of a minor girl being set ablaze by a youth after a failed rape bid in Allahabad district. The minor later succumbed to injuries after battling for
life for around a week.

Another teen had died after being burnt alive a few days ago by a jilted lover in Hathras district.

UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had assured that the government was serious about tackling crimes against the women and would take stern steps.

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to slap the National Security Act on people accused of raping minors.
