Results prove BJP's estimation wrong

Last Updated 17 May 2009, 18:25 IST

BJP in Malur in the previous election had won by a margin of 55,000 votes. The party had expected the same result in this election also. Even though the party gained lead, it failed to repeat the same performance. K Srinivas Gowda and Sudhakar Reddy of Congress had expressed their support to BJP, which helped the party to lead in these two constituencies. But it suffered a setback in KGF as it got 10,000 votes less.  Congress gained 30,000 and 21,000 votes in Shidlaghatta and Srinivaspur which is being analysed as the reason for the BJP’s defeat.
District in-charge minister S N Krishnaiah Shetty had sworn that he had not entered into any tacit pact with Congress, when he had been to the constituency to inaugurate the party’s campaign. But there were rumours in the political circles that Shetty would not work for the party, as he internally was having a good relation with Union Minister  K H Muniyappa. Now after the results these rumours are once again doing the rounds in BJP, creating dissatisfaction among the workers. This fact is supported by the reduction in victory margin to 13,000 from 55,000 votes. BJP workers openly express their ire against Shetty soon after the result was announced.
BJP, which had no significant presence in Kolar and Chintamani, has managed to secure a lead of 10,000 and 14,000 votes in these constituencies respectively. The increase is being attributed to K Srinivasa Gowda and legislator Sudhakara Reddy, the dissident Congress leaders.
In Kolar constituency Muniyappa fared badly even though the supporters of legislator R Vartur Prakash had supported him. This has been analysed as a warning to Prakash by the voters.
BJP was over-confident of its victory and this was exhibited during the campaign also. But the results proved the party wrong.
