Three doctors from North Korea were killed by unidentified attackers in Nigeria, Xinhua reported on Sunday.

The attack took place on Saturday night in the northeastern city of Potiskum in Yobe state, police said. While police said the gunmen scaled a wall around a building and murdered the three people, another security source said they stormed the premises through the back door.

According to BBC, officials said the victims had been working at a government-run hospital.

The throats of two were slit while the third was beheaded, residents said. A resident told Xinhua the attackers also ransacked the house. Earlier reports said the three Asian doctors may have been Chinese or South Korean nationals.

However, the Chinese embassy in Nigeria confirmed that no Chinese citizens were killed.
No one has claimed responsibility for the killing.

Potiskum has recently come under attacks following an uprising in the northeastern city of Maiduguri in 2009. Gunmen and bombers have attacked state institutions including prisons, police stations and schools, killing more than 1,500 people.
