Jammu and Kashmir government on Monday directed the police to investigate the recent killing of a sarpanch in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and submit a detailed report within two days.

The minister of state for home Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo  visited the residence of slain sapranch Javed Ahmad Wani on Monday at Kalantra Payeen, Kreeri in Baramulla.

He directed the deputy inspector general police North Kashmir range to conduct an inquiry into the incident within two days to find out the circumstances that led to the killing, sources said.

He asked the DIG to initiate strict action against the delinquent security personnel who was absent from duty when the militants killed Wani, they added.

Later the MoS home chaired a meeting of police and civil administration to review the overall law-and-order situation in the district.

BJP blames govt

Meanwhile, the BJP workers led by panchyati raj cell convener, Baldev Singh Baloria raised slogans against the National Conference led government and alleged that the government was not willing to provide security to the panches and sarpanches.

“Government had promised security to the panches and sarpanches but many of them have been killed by terrorists. Some of the panches and sarpanches have also resigned due to the persistent threat but government has not provided them security,”  Baloria alleged.

“They have also not been given their due powers under 73rd amendment of the Constitution, this shows that government had conducted elections only to get funds (from Centre) and they are not serious towards the security of panches and sarpanches,”  Baloria added.
