Music lovers in Bangalore were recently exposed to eight bands spanning alternate, post and hard rock under one roof at ‘Spindle Galaxy’, an event organised by A 91 Productions at Ion Bar and Kitchen.

In an attempt to create a space for bands to just perform rather than see each other in a competitive arena, the bands that were selected had to be “good, humble and have the right frame of mind”, as organiser Sachin Vijayapuram explains.
The evening began with a recently formed funk rock band, ‘Pinch’, that won many hearts with their pleasant take on music and lyrics.

When the electricity went off mid-performance, people cheered them on further, asking for a drum solo. “This is our second show ever and we’re still figuring out our sound. But it was really fun to play here and to even be given this stage,” shares Natalia Rebecca, the vocalist. “What I liked about the event was the variety of music it offered. It was pretty well organised and the audience noticed the nuances of each performer, which is impressive,” she adds.

The ‘Getting Laid Project’ was next, with a groovy sound that had people moving along to it. Next up was one of the most popular bands of the evening, ‘Groove Chutney’, that needed just one song called Stud Macha to make them a big hit with the crowd. Even post rock band, ‘Space Behind The Yellow Room’, went home with a new fan following.

Being such a new setup, bands took the liberty of experimenting with their sound, making the event full of surprises for the audience.

“It’s a pretty cool concept. I love the show because you don’t usually find bands playing psychedelic and post rock these days. More so, you don’t find takers for this kind of music often. But this is the only music that works for me,” smiles Avina, an audience member.

The second half started with an energetic performance by New Delhi rockers ‘Incidental Groove’, followed by ‘Rainburn’, a progressive rock band. One of the most-awaited acts was ambient/post-rock musicians ‘Until We Last’, who played to a crowded room of eager fans. The last band on the bill was ‘Broken Membrane’, who performed originals from their newly-released album.

If one was not interested in a particular band, foosball or snooker was an option to be considered.

Two young artists from Srishti School of Art and Design, Bhavani Kumar and Nicolai Nazareth, even grabbed the opportunity and set up a makeshift stall to sell their artwork.
