It rained couplets in Lok Sabha

The Lok Sabha on Wednesday witnessed a war of couplets between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Leader of the Opposition Sushma Swaraj.

Singh, while replying to a debate on a motion of thanks to President Pranab Mukherjee’s speech, cited a few couplets to target the main opposition.

“Humko hai unse wafa ki ummeed, jo jaante bhi nahin wafa ki chah (We expect faithfulness from those who do not understand the meaning of such a wish),” Singh said, targeting the BJP.

After the prime minister finished his reply on the motion, Swaraj requested the Speaker to allow her to reply, saying it would be an outstanding “debt” if she did not respond.

“Kuch toh majboorian rahee hongi, yun hi koi bewafa nahi hota (there must have been some compulsions, nobody becomes unfaithful for no reason),” she said. Swaraj immediately fired another couplet at Singh.

“Tumhe wafa yaad nahi, humein jafa yaad nahi. Zindagi aur maut ke toh do hi tarane hein, ek tumhe yaad nahi, ek hamein yaad nahi (When you don’t remember faithfulness, I don’t remember unfaithfulness. Life has only two songs, one you don't remember, one I don't).”
