Literature is a tool to correct society, says writer

Last Updated 16 March 2013, 18:05 IST

Writer Dr Mogalli Ganesh has described literature as a “rare instrument to lead society on the right path.”

“Literature, though can be classified into various genres, collectively serves as a tool to cultivate right values in human society. Writers should play the role of reformers at a time when values of life have deteriorated in the contemporary society,” Mogalli said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the 12th Kolar District Sahitya Sammelana at the Dr Masti Venkatesha Iyengar Rangamandira on Saturday.

Guards of society

Mogalli said literature has imbibed new sensibilities in the 20th century and termed litterateurs as ‘persons of wisdom who guard society.’ He said litterateurs should make attempts to widen the scope of freedom of expression conferred by the Constitution.

“Profit-making motive has crossed all limits among politicians. Society has been gaining more experience in committing errors. Litterateurs, while expressing their opinion on the political system should also advocate the kind of political system and society they want,” Mogalli said.

Describing Sa Raghunath, the Sammelana president as an embodiment of Gandhian principles, Mogalli said it was a matter of pride that a person of such stature was presiding over the literary fest.

Procession

Earlier, hundreds of persons from all walks of life took part in the procession of the Sammelana president. Legislator S N Krishnaiah Setty flagged off the procession from the Kuvempu statue on Araleri Road. The procession passed through Balaji Circle, Doddapete and Gandhi Circle before culminating at Masti Rangamandira.

Folk artistes drew the attention of the onlookers with their performance of Veeragase, Dollu Kunita etc. A huge crowd was seen at the book stalls set up at the Sammelana venue. As many as 15 books released on the occasion were sold at 50 per cent discount.
Kannada Sahitya Parishat district president J G Nagaraj, Deputy Commissioner Dr D S Vishwanath, legislator S N Krishnaiah Setty, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer S M Zulfikarullah and others were present.
