Bharatiya Janata Party legislator from Naragund and former minister C C Patil was injured when unidentified persons reportedly opened fire at him in Menasagi village in Ron taluk in Gadag district on Sunday night.

The incident took place while Patil was returning to Naragund in his car after attending a programme at Menasagi. The bullets hit his chest and left shoulder. He was admitted to a private hospital in Hubli late in the night. The legislator is said to be out of danger. His gunman and three others were also injured.

According to one version, a revolver of his gunman went off accidentally. Another report said a rival group led by a BJP ticket aspirant fired at the MLA. Patil, who was minister for women and child welfare in the D V Sadananda Gowda Cabinet, stepped down following allegations that he was watching porn clips on a mobile phone in the Assembly.
