Six arrested with illicit liquor in Okhla

Last Updated 25 March 2013, 19:15 IST

Four persons were arrested from south-east Delhi’s Okhla for smuggling illicit liquor in luxury cars.

Surender Kumar, Ravi Singh, Ajay and Dheeraj were suppling illicit liquor to bootleggers to be used during Holi. The accused persons belong to Uttar Pradesh, said a senior police officer.

Police have recovered 54 cartons containing 2,600 quarter bottle of spurious liquor. Two luxury sedans – a Skoda and A Tata Manza – which used for transporting liquor in the capital, were also seized.

The arrests took place following an investigation into a complaint about the involvement of an organised gang in suppling illicit liquor in Delhi and National Capital Region.

“During interrogation, they told police that they supply the brand which is prohibited in Delhi. They buy the illicit liquor at cheaper rates from neighbouring states and sell them at exorbitant price when registered liquor shops are closed during festival season,” said the officer. The gang used luxury cars to avoid police attention, he added.

90 cartons seized

Delhi Police crime branch apprehended two persons at GT Karnal Road in outer Delhi.
Around 90 cartons of liquor of two different brands that were banned in Delhi were recovered from their possession, an officer said.

The arrested persons have been identified as Sanjay and Satish. Police said the seized liquor was being smuggled into the city to be sold on Holi.
