The revision of DEd Syllabus, nearly after a decade is a welcome move, said Department of Collegiate Education Joint Director Philomena Lobo.

She was speaking after inaugurating a discussion with regard to the new curriculum framed at DIET Mangalore. The programme was organised by PADI - Valored, DIET Mangalore, Shikshana Sampanoolma Kendragala Okutta and District Sampanoolma Kedragala Okutta (Udupi).

After a one-day discussion, the programme concluded that the revised DEd syllabus is filled with lacunae. With an aim to bring out quality teachers, the syllabus should be formed according to the National Curriculum Framework guidelines and and humanistic psychology points. The syllabus should be discussed with education experts.

Most of the words included in DEd curriculum include abbreviations which are not explained. Many words need definitions which need to be given accordingly. Otherwise, the missing definitions will give rise to confusion.

Everybody needs to understand the curriculum. Lack of continuity and integrity in DEd curriculum is the main problem and may result in bringing out good teachers. Many chapters need revising of syllabus. The basic training and crash course should be given to DEd students at the beginning of the course. The whole DEd syllabus should stress on human values. Local ideas need to be included. It is unfortunate there are no education expert from coastal region in the curriculum formation committee.

The next meet with regard to the revision of syllabus will be held on the office of PADI- Valored on April 1.
